NAO - National Audit Office

Redesigning the Graduate Training Scheme selection process

The Situation
The National Audit Office (NAO) works on behalf of Parliament and the taxpayer to hold the UK Government to account for the use of public money and to help improve
the delivery of public services. The organisation recently took the decision to design a new graduate training scheme selection process that would attract the best graduates.

The Challenge
A recent review of the existing selection process and the role requirements for graduates had identified eight  competencies and associated behaviours that graduates need to display to perform effectively across a range of core tasks. It was therefore important that the new  selection process would measure these critical skill areas.

The Solution
During a four month design phase, Cubiks met with key stakeholders from across the NAO and carried out numerous focus groups with recent graduates and managers to understand how best to design, structure and implement the new process. On completion of the design phase, Cubiks rolled-out a new 3 stage process that was specially designed to meet the needs of both the NAO and applicants.

The Result
With the new selection process successfully launched, the NAO has a robust and highly structured graduate recruitment scheme in place that is proving popular with both assessors and candidates.
